Educational Assistance to Upcountry Community
For years and years, the upcountry estate community were neglected without basic facilities and education. Even after the war was over, lots of help poured into the North and East, but the upcountry area wasn't getting its fair share of assistance.
Step number one is making them realize Education is the only way out. They need to study, perform well academically, which would then turn into professional progress and better life.
We have been addressing the situation in three different ways for the past six years. First two of the initiatives will promote Science, Mathematics and Technology Education in the upcountry region.
1. Sponsorship of students from Deep-inside estates.
In 2022, we started by sponsoring 20 GCE AL (2023) students from the deep down estates to come and stay in boarding and attend four main town (1AB) schools that offer Science, Mathematics and Technology Education. We bumped up that number in 2023 to 25 students from the GCE AL 2024 class. We further increased the number of students to 35 , from the the GCE AL 2025 class. This time, we are planning to take in 50 students from the GCE AL 2026 class. An amount of LKR 8,000 per month (LKR 96,000 per year) is given to students for their boarding costs. We need your support to one or more of such students, your commitment will be AUD$500/CAD$450 / US$325/ GBP 260 per year for 2 years.
2. We started bringing in teachers from Jaffna, Colombo and Batticaloa to prepare the GCE AL science stream students for their examinations. Sixteen to Twenty such sessions are arranged each year. Out of the 180 students who sat for the GCE AL 2023 exams in NuwaraEliya Zone, Division 2-4, 100 of them qualified for University admission, with 12 students qualifying for Medicine and 18 students for Engineering. This was a big jump from 3 Medicines and 6 Engineering from the GCE AL 2022 class. We did the same for the GCE AL 2024 class and students are currently sitting for their examinations. We hope to continue these in 2025 for the students sitting for the exams in Oct 2025. Amount needed to such sessions for the whole year is LKR 2 Million (AUD$11,000/ CAD$10,000, US$7,000 / GBP 5,500). This includes amount for teacher resources, notes preparation, paper setting and printing.
3. On top of the above for the School level education, we have been supporting University students from the upcountry region with the monthly support for their education since 2018. Eligible students are assisted with LKR 10,000 per month for the course of their studies. We are currently assisting more than 100 students from the upcountry region attending 13 different Universities throughout the island.
